William Atlas McDowell and Dovie Roxanna Morgan

The Family of William Atlas McDowell and Dovie Roxanna Morgan.

Dovie Morgan is the daughter of Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner.

William Atlas McDowell - born May 12, 1882 and died April 1, 1941. He was married three times; first to Mary Procter, second to Ella Rixbury (Rigsby). and third to Dovie Roxanne Morgan Wells. Mary Procter was born May 10, 1880 and died on Nov. 29, 1914. She was the daughter of Albert and Jane Procter. William Atlas McDowell and Mary Procter were married on Nov. 20, 1902 by Reverend Hilliard. The witnesses were Mrs. Hilliard and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. The children of this marriage are as follows:

1. Clyde McDowell - born Sept.  9, 1905 and died May 1, 1906.
2. Taft McDowell - born Nov. 12, 1908 and died Feb. 20, 1909.
3. Lissey McDowell - born Aug. 10, 1910 and died Feb. 8, 1913.
4. Clara McDowell - born Feb. 24, 1907 and died in 1945.  She married Albert Spurgeon Morgan, Sr.

After Mary Procter McDowell's death, William Atlas McDowell married Ella Rixbury Kelly, a widow.  Ella was the daughter of J. J. Rixbury and Sally Newton.  Ella died during a flu epidemic on Nov. 29, 1918.  She was born Feb. 18, 1894 and had a child, James Kelly, by her previous marriage.  To her marriage with Willliam Atlas McDowell, there were two children.

1. William Arnold  McDowell - born March 24, 1916 and married Lucille Holbrook on May 26, 1934. She was the daughter of John Holbrook and Lena Pitts and was born on March 7, 1916.
2. Mary Louise McDowell - born Oct. 16, 1918 and married Troy Coe Winslow (born June 26, 1916)

William Atlas McDowell's third marriage was to Dovie Roxanna Morgan Wells, a widow. The were married on October 14, 1919 accordingly to family records kept in a picture on the wall. Dovie was born March 28, 1896 and died March 16, 1968. She was the daughter of Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner. There were three children from this marriage.

1. Harding Atlas McDowell born July 18, 1920 and married Evangeline Hawks who was born Dec. 5, 1922 and died August 16, 1987. She was the daughter of Daniel Porter Hawks and Roney Della Stanley. They were married on Dec. 23, 1941.
2. Joseph Wesley McDowell - born July 3, 1925 and married Faye Barker Hedrick.  She was born April 30, 1926, the daughter of James Franklin Hedrick and Minnie Etta Barker.  They were married June 11, 1949.
3. Margie Jean McDowell - born March 26, 1937 and married Terry Ronald McDowell.

Dovie Morgan married Charlie Clifton Wells on November 26, 1913 as her first husband. He died on December 6, 1918 leaving two children.

1. Ethel Gertrude Wells - born May 19, 1915 and married Myron Claude Hayworth who was born May 14, 1915.  Ethel Hayworth died in January 1987.  To this marriage were born two children.
2. Frances Luetta Wells - born July 17, 1916 and died Dec. 17, 1971.  She married Bernice Reitzel Nance who was born Oct. 12,1924.  After her death, Reitzel Nance married Peggy Ison Jackson (born Oct. 23, 1927).  There was one child by Frances Luetta Wells.
