The McDowell Genealogy

The Stoner Families

The name Stoner comes from the spelling of Steiner which is of German descent. The Stoner families married into many families, one of which was the Morgan family that is also discussed on this web site. The Stoner and Morgan marriages make up a large arm of the William Atlas McDowell ancestors. My grandmother Dovie Roxanna Morgan descends from the marriage of Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner. Details are laid out below. Only the direct descent information is presented herein.

Our discussion of the Stoner family begins with one John Abraham Stoner who was born between 1755-1760 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to John and Margaretha Stoner. The family later moved to Montgomery County, Maryland. While in Maryland, John Abraham Stoner enlisted as a private in the Maryland troops. In 1782, he moved to Rowan County, NC and established a homeplace that is now called Southmont. [ Source - Ruth Bright Stoner, Davidson County Heritage Book, page 560 ]

In studying the Stoner families in the Rowan County area, it is possible that there is a Michael Stoner and a Peter Stoner, in Orange County, that could be brothers of John Abraham Stoner. We have not attempted to prove this at this time. Peter Stoner served in the Revolutionary War and his pension papers are on file and available. His family moved to Indiana and died in that state. Michael Stoner had at least three children and lived in the Davidson and Rowan County areas. His three sons are believed to be Peter Stoner of Davidson County who married a lady named Catharine; Henry Stoner who married Barbara Earnhart; and, Charles Stoner who married Leah Ludwick. More information on these lines will be made availabe as researched.

John Abraham Stoner

Our direct line comes from the John Abraham Stoner line. We do not know the name of his wife, but we believe he had at least three children as follows:

Jacob Stoner - born between 1776-1784. He died before 1850 in Rowan County. In the 1840 census, he was enumerated next to John A(braham) Stoner. He married Barbara Trexler in 1814 in Rowan County and she was born between 1790-1800 and died around February 16, 1850 when she signs her will in Rowan County. In her will she lists her sons in order of birth as Henry, Alexander, William, and Jacob. She also lists her daughters in order of birth as Elizabeth, Nancy, Margaret, Jane, Andeline, and Juanah. Her son Alexander is presented as the executor of her estate.

Peter Stoner - born 1786 and died 1846. There is a marble marker erected by his son Samuel Stoner in the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. Peter Stoner's estate was executed in 1847 and 1848. His will was signed on January 15, 1846 and he lists his wife as Mary Ann Stoner. There is a marriage record between Peter Stoner and Peggy Eller on May 26, 1807 in Rowan County. Peggy and Margaret are used interchangeably but not with Mary Ann. It's possible that his children were born of Peggy Eller and sometime after her death, he married a Mary Ann. We do know that a Peter Stoner married a Mary Campbell on November 3, 1843 in Rowan County. This could be the wife Mary Ann listed in the will. We do know his children were Alexander, Samuel, Riley, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, and Susannah Stoner.

Jonathan Stoner - was born January 14, 1797 in Rowan County. His details follow below.

The Jonathan Stoner and Easter Ludwick Family

Jonathan Stoner was born January 14, 1797 in Rowan County and he died on March 29, 1879 in Rowan County. He married Easter Ludwick who was born in 1808 in Rowan County. They were married on April 26, 1830 in Rowan County. Easter is sometimes written as Esther. She is buried at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. The will of Jonathan Stoner was written in 1783 and probated in 1879. [Transcribed will]

The following children were born to Jonathan Stoner and Easter Ludwick.

Eve Ann Stoner - born 1833 in Rowan County. She was married three times and moved to Mississippi.

Daniel Stoner - born 1835 in Rowan County.

William Stoner - born July 15, 1836 in Rowan County and died Jan 1, 1923 in Rowan County. He is buried at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC.

Aveline (Emeline) Stoner - born 1838 in Rowan County and died before October 10, 1873 in Rowan County.

Nancy Stoner - born 1840 in Rowan County.

Mildred (Camilla) Stoner - born 1841 in Rowan County. She married Miles P. Morgan on January 7, 1858 in Rowan County. She died before 1879 in Rowan County. Camilla is my direct ancestor in the Stoner family who married Miles P. Morgan. They both die young.

Julia Ann Stoner - born December 31, 1841 in Rowan County and died July 19, 1917.

Alfred Stoner - born 1844 in Rowan County.

John Monroe Stoner - born 1848 in Rowan County and he died before 1878 in Rowan County.

Leah C Stoner - born November 14, 1848 in Rowan County and died December 20, 1886 in Rowan County.

Because Jonathan lived to be 82, he outlived some of his children and the distribution of his estate was messy. However, the mess that was created and discussed in court documents help to sort out why the distributions were made as they were. Part of the problem is that some of his children claimed that William and John M. received considerations of land from Jonathan during his lifetime and this land should count as part of their share as heirs. The court agrees with this position and various efforts are made to work out the final division. The documents are lengthy in nature but they help describe all the children of Jonathan Stoner. The author has transcribed all the court records in this one document. The original documents are found in this document.

Here is a brief description of the heirs.

Eve Ann Stoner had been married three times and was a widow at the time of Jonathan's estate in 1879. Her share went to her three living children who were not named and they were "living out of state" in Mississippi.

Daniel Stoner must have died without heirs as he is not listed.

Aveline (Emeline) Stoner died before 1873 and her share goes to two children Lundy Ludwick (of age) and Libris Ludwick (an infant) from her marriage with Alfred M. Ludwick, plus since Alfred Ludwick is dead and she has remarried to James Ritchie, their child Jimima Ritchie is included. Remember that heirs are almost always the children of the deceased, not their spouses.

Nancy Stoner is listed so we assume that after her marriage to Roland Lineburger there must not be any surviving children.

Mildred (Camilla) Stoner is complicated because she had married my great, great grandfather Miles P Morgan and they had one child Adam Ivy Morgan - my great grandfather - and Mies P Morgan had died. She remarried to a Bassinger and had other children who would be heirs because she dies about the same time as her father Jonathan. Two of the Bassinger children were from her and her husband Daniel C Bassinger. They were Columbus and Robert. There were other Bassinger children but not "of her body". So, it total, she represented three heirs, Adam Ivy Morgan, Columbus and Robert Bassinger.

Julia Ann Stoner had married Levi Frick and was living as an heir.

William Stoner was living but there was the question of the earlier land distribution.

John M. Stoner was deceased and his two children Eve and William Stoner were heirs.

The Family of Miles P Morgan and Mildred (Camilla) Stoner

Mildred (Camilla) Stoner was born in 1841 in Rowan County and died about 1879 before her father Jonathan Stoner's estate was settled. She married first to Miles P Morgan who was the son of Hugh Morgan on January 7, 1858. Miles P Morgan's estate records are available and he enlisted as a private on the 13th day of August 1862 in Northampton County, NC. His residence was Rowan County, NC. He died on August 13, 1863 in the battle at Gettysburg, PA (see attached record). They had one son as follows:

Adam Ivy Morgan - born April 21, 1861 and died February 28, 1926.

After the death of Miles P Morgan, Camille Morgan married Daniel C. Bassinger on September 12, 1869. It appears that the two Bassinger boys Columbus and Robert Bassinger survived the marriage and years. Daniel Bassinger had obviously been married before and had a daughter Alice Bassinger born in 1862 and Daniel A Bassinger born in 1868. It appears from 1880 census records that Daniel C Bassinger may also be dead as the young son Robert Bassinger is living with Edward and Susan Pool and is working as a laborer on the farm and he is only ten years old.

Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner

Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner

The Family of Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner

Adam Ivy Morgan was the only child of Miles P Morgan and Mildred (Camilla) Stoner. He was born on April 21, 1891 and died on February 28, 1926. He married Eva Lucindy Stoner on July 17, 1884. Eva was born on November 26, 1864 and died on January 9, 1928. According to census birth records, the gravestone marker has the births of Adam Ivy and Eva Lucindy switched. They are buried at the cemetery in Liberty, Rowan County, NC at the intersection of Stokes Ferry Road and Liberty Road. The cemetery is part of the church on the corner but Liberty Road is between the church and the graveyard. The marker is a large double marker and is clearly readible. Eva Lucindy Stoner is the daughter of Charles Washington Stoner and Peny Morgan. This lineage will be described in the sections that follow.

According to information on the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records, Adam and Eva Morgan had twelve children. We only know the names of the nine who survived infancy. The following are the nine children of Adam and Eva Morgan:

Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Morgan Tombstone

Ada L Morgan - She was born January 1885 and married John B Ludwick. The were married on 24 October 1909 in Rowan County, NC. She died on November 14, 1959 in Forsyth County, NC.

Charles A Morgan - He was born on February 12, 1888 in Gold Hill, North Carolina. Charles completed his draft card papers for World World I on June 5, 1917.

Eltha Gertrude (Gertie) Morgan -She was born in January 1892. Gertie, as she was called, was living with Lloyd Ball and Ester S Morgan Ball, her sister in 1930 and she never married.

Essie L Morgan - She was born In March 1896.

Dovie Roxanna Morgan - born March 23, 1894. She died on March 16, 1968 at the High Point Memorial Hospital and is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery on Montlieu Avenue in High Point, NC on one of several McDowell plots in the cemetery. Dovie is the grandmother of the editors of this web site Keith and Jerry McDowell and the mother of our father Harding Atlas McDowell. Dovie's year of birth has been in question over the years. Her sisters used to tease her that she was two years old than she said. Her tombstone says Mar 23, 1896 but her sister Essie was born in March 1896 according to census records. Both the 1900 and 1910 census state Dovie's year of birth as 1894. Even though the Bible record with Charlie Clifton Wells is written as March 28, 1896, we will go with the census records; otherwise, we have major problems with dates and Dovie and Essie were NOT twins.

Albert Spurgeon Morgan, Sr. - He was born in August 1899.

Eva Belle Morgan - She was born in 1901.

Esther S Morgan - She was born in 1905.

Oka O Morgan - She was born in 1907. She married Charles Wagoner. He was born in 1909 and died on March 10, 1998.

There are a number of pictures available for the children of Adam Ivey Morgan because his son Charles A Morgan was a photographer and focused on portrait pictures. For a good look at this family, go to the Morgan Portfolio.

The Peter Stoner and Peggy Eller Family

The interesting part of presenting the Stoner families is the fact that Adam Ivey Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner were first cousins. They shared the same grandparents. So, in order to present Eva Lucindy Stoner's lineage, we'll start at this point and back up to the family of Peter Stoner and Peggy Eller. Peter Stoner was a son of John Abraham Stoner discussed at the top of this page.

Peter Stoner was born in 1786 and died in 1846 in Rowan County, NC. He married Peggy Eller on April 12, 1833 in Rowan County. The will for Peter Stoner is signed on January 15, 1846. His wife's name is listed as Mary Ann. Elizabeth Bame is the eldest daughter. Money is bequeathed to the heirs of the bodies of daughters Mary Ann Doby and Susannah Doby. The will seems to indicate that the daughters are deceased. The will says "devise to Alexander child". Since Peter's son Alexander is dead if 1846, we read the tell text to mean the child of Alexander Stoner for Samel Stoner to pay for schooling. We believe the will is referring the the son of Alexander Stoner named Peter Clark Stoner who is born just as Alexander dies.

In the Saint Matthews Lutheran Church cemetery is a stone erected with the engraving "This marble is erected by his son Samuel". Peter Stoner, born 1786 and died 1846. Samuel Stoner and Riley Stoner are the executors of the estate of Peter Stoner executed in 1847 and 1848. There are guardianshi8p papers for Peter Clark Stoner and Crissy/Cristiner Stoner and are the orphans of Alexander Stoner and also Peter Stoner. They are listed as heirs of Peter Stoner. Peter Clark Stoner now lives with Riley Stoner in 1850 and subsequent census records. Crissy Stoner lives with Samuel Stoner in the 1850 census. It is easy to mistake these two as chidren of the wrong parents without the estate paper information.

The following are the six known children of Peter Stoner and Peggy Eller.

Alexander Stoner - He was born between 1800-1810 and married Rachel Stoner. They were married on April 12, 1833 in Rowan County.

Samuel Stoner - He was born in 1804 in Rowan County, NC. He married Peggy (Margaret) Wilheim on April 3, 1830 in Rowan County, NC. He is buried in 1857 in Saint Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. His estate was prepared in 1857 in Rowan County, NC. The authors of this web site are descended through Samuel Stoner.

Riley Stoner - He was born between 1815-1820 in Rowan County, NC

Elizabeth Stoner. She married Mathias Bame on April 26, 1828.

Mary Ann Stone - daughter

Susannah Stoner - daughter

It is most probably that Peter Stoner's wife Peggy Eller died after the children were born because there is a married record of a Peter Stoner and Mary Campbell on November 3, 1843 in Rowan County. We don't think they had any children. Since the will refers to his wife as Mary Ann, this makes logical sense.

The Samuel Stoner and Peggy (Margaret) Wilhelm Family

Samuel Stoner was the second child of Peter Stoner and Peggy Eller. He was born in 1804 in Rowan County, NC and is burried in Saint Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. He died in 1857 according to his estate papers. His estate papers were executed in 1857 by Henry Wilheim (there are different spellings of Wilheim and Wilhelm). Samuel Stoner's first wife was born on August 3, 1797 in Rowan County, NC and died on March 12, 1855 in Rowan County, NC. She is buried at Saint Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury, NC. After he death, Samuel Stoner married E. C. Richey on April 14, 1857. It appears that he then died before the end of the year since the estate was executed in 1857. There were no children of This second marriage. Samuel wrote his will in July 22, 1857 just right after he had remarried. [Transcribed] His German descent is very obvious when reading the will and observing the German/English words and spelling.

St. Matthews Lutheran Church was established in 1838. The original church, erected in 1845, sat there the cemetery is now located. Three acres of land were purchased o Bebruary 21, 1845 for the sum of $10.00 from John and Anna Wilheim for church. Since the church was located on Wilhelm land, St. Matthews Lutheran Church was originally called Wilhelm's Church for many years. This land that was sold joined the land of Samuel Stoner who married Margaret (Peggy) Wilhelm, so we know where Samuel Stoner lived. They had two sons Charles Washinton and John Stoner. John Stoner drowned while crossing Dutch Second Creek and was the first grave after the new church was built around 1838. The cemetery started out as the Wilhelm Family Graveyard. In approximatley 1988, the original configuration of the cemetery was changed to algin the headstones into definite rows. [ Source for this information comes from the following publications: St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, found in the Rowan Public Library and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1838-1938, compiled by Rev. F. P. Caubble, Ph. D. ]

Charles Washington Stoner - he was born in 1831 in Rowan County, NC and married Peny (Pena) Morgan on Jan 1, 1851 in Rowan County. He died before June 28, 1894 in Rowan County, NC.

Catherine Stoner - she was born 1835 in Rowan County, NC. and married Thomas Bassiner on January 1, 1851.

John Stoner - born in 1838 and drowned in Dutch Second Creek. The writing on the tombstone at St. Matthews Lutheran Church says "John Stoner, 1838, the first person buried at St. Matthews Lutheran Church and son of Samuel and Margaret Wilhelm Stoner.

The Charles Washington Stoner Famly

Charles Washington Stoner was born in 1829 in Rowan County, NC. He died before June 28, 1894 (see notes below). His first marriage was to Elizabeth Bruner on Janauary 1, 1851 in Rowan County. Two children were born to this marriage as follows:

Martha Jane Stoner - she was born in October 1855 in Rowan County, NC. She married Ruben Eller. They were married on November 25, 1877 in Rowan County, NC. She died after 1900 and is listed in the 1900 Rowan County census.

John Murphy Stoner - he was born in 1852 in Rowan County, NC.

After the death of Elizabeth Bruner, Charles Washington Stoner married Peny D. Stoner on December 26, 1856. On June 29, 1894, Peny D. Stoner, widow, receives one year's support from the estate of Charles W. Stoner. This is noted in a report from court appointed commissioners. Thus, Charles Washington Stoner is dead before June 28, 1894. Peny D. Morgan was born in 1837 in Rowan County, NC. In the 1880 census, Charles lists his occupation as shoemaker.

Charles Washington Stoner

Charles Washington Stoner and Peny Morgan had children as follows:

Edith E. Stoner - she was born in 1859 in Rowan County, NC.

Eva Lucindy Stoner - She married Adam Ivey Morgan on July 17, 1884.

Mary L Stoner - she was born in 1867 in Rowan County, NC and married Moses L Carter on December 25, 1887.

The Hugh Morgan Family

Finally, in order to connect Adam Ivy Morgan and Eva Lucindy Stoner and their descendants, it is necessary to show the Hugh Morgan family here. The Morgan families are traceable on the tab from the main home page, but since they intermarried so much, I have to include Hugh Morgan here to draw out the relationships.

Hugh Morgan is the son of Nathan Morgan (more on the Morgan tab). He was born in 1797 according to the 1850 census. Me married Polly Poole (Mary Ann in the 1860 census). She was born in 1802 in Rowan County, NC. They were married on September 28, 1816 in Rowan County. In the 1850 census Hugh Morgan has an Omy (Naomi) Morgan age 90 iving with him. This is his mother, wife of Nathan Morgan as we shall see in the Morgan information.

We have identified eight children as follows:

Joice Morgan - she was born in 1823 in Rowan County, NC

Patsy Morgan - she was born in 1828 in Rowan County, NC

Omy (Naomi) Morgan - she was born in 1830 in Rowan County, NC

Miles P Morgan - He was born in 1832 in Rowan County, NC and died sometime before September of 1869 when his wife Camilla Stoner remarries after his death. He married Milly/Mildred (Camilla) Stoner on January 16, 1858. She was born in 1841 and dies before her father Samuel Stoner's estate was carried out in 1879. Miles and Camilla Stoner are the parents of Adam Ivy McDowell (see above).

Soloman Morgan - he was born in 1833 in Rowan County, NC.

Pena D. Morgan - she was born in 1836 in Rowan County, NC and married Charles Washington Stoner on December 26, 1856. Charles had been previously married to Elizabeth Bruner who died before 1856 having had two children. In the 1900 census, Pena D Morgan is living with her daugther Mary L Stoner Carter who married Moses L. Carter. She is listed a mother-in-law born in July 1835 and widowed. The census says she had four children only two of whom are living - those would be Mary L Morgan Carter and Eva Lucindy Stoner Morgan, wife of Adam Morgan. Do not confuse the step daughter Martha Jane Stoner Eller who is also in the 1900 census for she is not a daughter of Pena Morgan. Pena Morgan is not found in the 1910 census, so we presume she has died. Also, neither Moses L Carter nor his wife Mary L Carter are alive in 1910.

Ivy Morgan - he was born in 1840 in Rowan County, NC.

Elizabeth Morgan - she was born in 1852 in Rowan County, NC
